Champion is on top again
MotoGP winner Nicky Hayden is beginning this year the way he finished the last - ahead of the other riders in the competition.
The defending champion set the fastest lap time during recent testing at Phillip Island in Australia, coming in at just under a minute 30 seconds on qualifying tyres during the third and final day of the trials.
Having also completed over 100 laps on that same day of testing, Hayden felt that he was making progress with every aspect of his new 800cc bike, from its chassis to its suspension to its tyres.

He commented afterwards: "The last day here was definitely the most positive of this test and also of the year so far.
"We found a few settings on the bike that I liked and made some good progress. I also did a longer run and the times were pretty consistent in the one minute 30 second bracket on race tyres, which is positive too."
Despite having been the quickest rider on show in Australia, the American promised that he would not be getting carried away with this result, given that six-time world champion Valentino Rossi did not take part in these trials.
Hayden's record at Phillip Island is fairly impressive: in four years of MotoGP racing prior to last week's test, he made the podium twice and never finished outside the top six.
