Edwards steps out of Rossi's shadow

Veteran Yamaha rider Colin Edwards has for once outshone his more illustrious teammate with a terrific performance that bodes well for the coming season.

Valentino Rossi has been in top form of late and having been the quickest rider during the previous week's testing in Sepang, Malaysia, the Italian was again in top form there last week, nearly beating the record time he set for the course in qualification last season.

Yet even he was upstaged for once by Roberts, who surpassed that same record with a lap-time of barely more than two minutes, greatly impressing both Rossi and Yamaha team boss David Brivio in the process.

Roberts said afterwards: "I came in from the first [qualifier] thinking that I'd probably done a low two minutes one second.

"I'd made a couple of small mistakes and thought I could have been faster, so I couldn't believe it when it was around the two minute 0.6 seconds mark."

Nonetheless, the 32-year-old admitted that he'd found the third and final day of testing tiring and having completed 14 laps in the afternoon, he opted to bring an early end to his day's riding.

The American will hope to continue this form into the new season and improve on the seventh placed finish he attained in 2006, having come fifth and then fourth in the preceding two years.
