Yamaha makes top five in Qatar

Both Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards fared well during recent testing in Qatar, which augers well for the start of the new MotoGP season there next month.

Having held first and second place going into the final day, the two Yamaha riders were eventually usurped by both Dani Pedrosa and John Hopkins, with Rossi the third fastest rider overall at Doha, while Edwards was fifth.

Rossi nonetheless claimed that, despite some problems still remaining, both he and his teammate have the chance to put things right in the final trials in Spain and he warned that they are both already strong enough to go for victory here in three weeks' time.

The Italian reflected: "It's been a good test overall, despite running into a few problems.

"Like I said yesterday, it's better to find the problems now so we have the chance to fix them! As I expected, the other riders have improved a lot over these three days and Colin and I weren't able to stay at the top today. Still, we're quite fast and our bike is quite good, so we're happy."

His American colleague was more rueful, having had to cut his initial long run of laps short after Suzuki's Hopkins was involved in a crash, although he also voiced the opinion that the test had been "really good".

Last year, Rossi managed his first win of the season on this track, which turned out to be his only podium finish in the first five races of 2006, while Edwards also has a decent record in Qatar and finished second there back in 2004.
