Police back calls for mini-moto registration
Officers in Manchester have thrown their support behind a local MP's campaign for all off-road bikes to be registered, in order to aid the clampdown on nuisance riders.
Graham Stringer's new bill calls for the compulsory and clear registration of all types of off-road bike, thereby making it easier for police to identify the owners of these vehicles and to crack down on antisocial bikers.
The bill will go in front of Parliament for a second reading next month and it has now attracted the support of Greater Manchester Police Authority, which claims that Mr Stringer's proposals offer a real opportunity to gain some control over mini-moto use.

Vice chairman Paul Murphy explained: "Graham Stringer's bill for a mandatory and retrospective off-road registration scheme is about how we help communities to take back control and the Greater Manchester Police Authority whole-heartedly supports this.
"We urge MPs to vote for the registration scheme in Parliament on March 2nd."
Police figures estimated that there were 100,000 miniature motorbikes in operation in the UK during 2005, accounting for an average of one death per month, as well as for two out of every five complaints made about antisocial behaviour.
However, the idea of registering off-road bikes has come in for criticism in the past, with the Motor Cycle Industry branding the concept an "ineffective gimmick" back in November.
