Rossi comes top in Spanish test

Valentino Rossi continued his good form in Spain last week, setting a new record there during his preparations for the forthcoming MotoGP season.

Last year's runner-up was the fastest rider in a timed run-out on the third day of testing at Jerez, with his quickest lap of less than one minute 38 and a half seconds well down on the record previously set for the track by Loris Capirossi during qualifying last year.

Rossi said afterwards that he had thoroughly enjoyed his duel with Dani Pedrosa, who was only a sixth of a second behind him, before dedicating his success to all those who have contributed to his fine form over the winter months.

He added: "This new bike is working really well with the new tyres, both with race and qualifying tyres, so this is very important too and I would like to say thank you to Michelin.

"It was fun to see just how far I can push this new bike and it has answered me brilliantly; I felt very confident in my Yamaha today and I was able to ride it on the limit."

The Italian finished on a note of caution by highlighting the fact that the season has not even started yet, although he is understandably excited about the first official race of the year in a fortnight's time.

His form so far in 2007 has been breathtaking, as he set the fastest lap time during a test in Malaysia back in January, before featuring among the top three racers in a trial in Qatar, where the first race of this season will also take place.
