Veteran can't wait for season to start

Having battled back from adversity, experienced Ilmor rider Jeremy McWilliams is understandably excited about making his return to MotoGP racing this weekend.

The Qatari GP marks McWilliams' first participation in the competition since an abortive appearance at the Czech GP for Proton back in 2005 and it will also be the 177th world championship class race of a career spanning back to 1993.

Now just a month short of his 43rd birthday, the Northern Irishman is looking forward to racing again on the Losail track, having briefly taken part in tests there last month, although he is also unsurprisingly tense ahead of the task that awaits him.

He explained: "I can't wait for the first race - it will be great once the lights go green - there's so much anticipation and nerves before the first race of any season so it'll be good to get it out of the way!"

It will be a fairytale return to top class racing for this tough competitor, who has shown remarkable spirit to come back from a bad crash at the tail end of last year, in which he sadly lost two fingers, as well as breaking his femur.

During his convalescence, it was announced that he and the Australian Andrew Pitt would be representing Ilmor in this year's competition, following the British-based manufacturer's MotoGP debut in Portugal towards the end of last season.
