Older riders account for a large proportion of the UK's motorcyclists and are imparting their enthusiasm onto the younger generation, according to a new survey.
Despite motorcycling usually being connoted with youth, more than a fifth of Britain's female bikers are actually of retirement age, with the nation's oldest known woman biker set to turn 80 soon.
Indeed, although there has been a 40 per cent increase in the number of bikers aged below 20 reported to have taken out bike insurance during the past five years, the AA's poll indicated, this growth was outstripped regardless by pensioner demand.

Head of motorcycle insurance Kate Scammell commented: "We are definitely seeing more silver surfers seeking the freedom of the road on two wheels.
"Young people are becoming more interested in motorbikes as well, perhaps spurred on by their grandparents."
Older male riders appear to be just as keen as their female counterparts on motorcycling, with the total number of people aged over 60 buying motorbikes increasing by more than a third between 2005 and 2006.
Recent figures from the Motor Cycle Industry show that these trends are helping to drive up overall demand for two-wheeled transport, which rose by six per cent year-on-year in January.
