MAG and government singing from the same song sheet

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has said that there are signs the government is beginning to see its point of view on a number of motorcycling issues.

Having for years trumpeted the benefits that motorcycling can offer to society, MAG was delighted with a recent Department for Transport (DfT) booklet that promoted the motorbike as an integral part of Britain's transport network.

It was particularly pleased with the revision of DfT's guidance on the issue of riders using bus lanes, which the organisation felt was previously biased against the concept and it believes that this change could be decisive in obtaining access on roads across the UK.

Director of public affairs Trevor Baird commented: "We've spent a long time banging this drum and it's good to see that the government at last likes the sound we're making."

Transport for London (TfL) has been testing the possibility of bikers using bus lanes for five years now, but MAG has often been disappointed by the complex methods used to analyse the scheme's success and by certain negative pronouncements TfL has made.

Nonetheless, the British Motorcyclists Federation recently predicted a possible sea change on this level as well, following TfL's decision to hire a motorcyclist to review the findings of its draft study into the issue.
