BMF senses wind of change
The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) has welcomed a new government leaflet on motorcycling as a sign of its increasingly positive attitude towards this mode of transport.
According to the BMF, the new Department for Transport (DfT) advice leaflet for local authorities is evident of a switch from a hostile outlook on biker usage of bus lanes to a far more permissive stance.
However, the organisation recognises that it will take more than the government's promptings to really affect change at a grassroots level and it called on riders to lobby their local authorities in support of their being granted access to bus lanes.

Senior government relations executive Trevor Magner explained: "If we are now moving towards this more positive approach from government (and hopefully continued exemption from road pricing too), then we will also need robust advice to local authorities to adapt the infrastructure in relation to motorcycle parking provision, but it is local motorcyclists who will need to make the demand if councils are to take note."
The BMF also registered a modicum of dissatisfaction with the DfT's position, as it continued to focus on the issue of rider safety, rather than on the convenience and efficiency that motorbikes can offer.
Nonetheless, it was largely satisfied with the leaflet, as is the Motorcycle Action Group, which also recently welcomed the government's more favourable perspective on biker bus lane usage.
