Bike crash was nothing to chuckle about

One of children's television's longest serving stars was injured after falling from his motorbike while on holiday in the Greek islands last week.

Paul Elliott, one half of BBC One's famous Chuckle Brothers, was riding his bike in Kefalonia when he was forced to take evasive action to avoid a herd of goats, leaving him with a broken nose, cuts and bruises and a black eye.

However, the biggest blow of all may have been to his pride, as he was recognised by a passing group of unsympathetic British tourists, who hailed him with cries of the Brothers' famous catchphrase, 'To me, to you'.

Afterwards, Mr Elliot explained: "I knew if I didn't brake and swerve, I would have gone into [the goats].

"As I braked, I lost control and I'm not sure exactly what happened. The next thing I knew, I was on the floor with the motorbike on top of me."

The 59-year-old and his brother Barry first came to the nation's attention by winning talent show New Faces back in 1974 and then eventually got their own programme in the mid-1980s, with the duo having been stalwarts of the kids' TV scene ever since.

Mr Elliot commented that up until the accident he had been feeling "like Marlon Brando in the film The Wild Ones" - a role that recently earned the late actor a posthumous place in a top ten list of biker idols compiled by the Motor Cycle News magazine.
