HA recognised for protecting bikers from spillages
The Highways Agency (HA) has received an award from the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) for its drive to publicise the danger that diesel spillages pose to bikers.
This year's KillSpills award was conferred upon the HA for producing stickers reminding drivers of goods vehicles not to overfill their tanks as this can then cause spillages that are often a threat to motorcyclists.
It distributed 180,000 of them in tandem with agencies such as the police and fire service, while also been ensuring that all of its own vehicles bear the sticker, as well as all other vehicles in usage by the public sector.

HA safety action plan coordinator Stuart Lovatt commented: "I'm pleased and honoured that the Agency has been nominated for this award.
"We take road safety very seriously and have recognised that diesel spillages are a real hazard to all road users and especially to motorcyclists. We are working hard to raise awareness that diesel spillage can be avoided."
The BMF must be particularly pleased with the HA's efforts this year, given the emphasis that its campaign places on convincing government departments to remind their drivers about the need to ensure they do not put too much diesel in their tanks.
Spillages claimed the lives of 16 riders between 2000 and 2004 and the KillSpills initiative is therefore an unsurprisingly popular one, with over 5,000 motorcyclists participating in last September's associated rally.
