BMF: Kids don't want to ride

Youngsters are becoming decreasingly partial towards motorbike ownership as the cost of running one rises, according to the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF).

Spokesperson Bill Stone noted that young adults today tend to buy a scooter as a "means to an end" until they can afford a car, with the result that the motorcycle is nowadays favoured by older road users instead.

He explained: "What we then find is they go through the car, probably settle down and then think 'I miss my bike, I used to like my bike' and then buy a bike.

"The biggest popularity for motorcycles age-wise is probably 32-45; that's where the bulk of motorcyclists are these days."

The increasing cost of insuring a bike is undoubtedly a major factor in this trend, with Mr Stone noting that a policy for a rider in their early twenties is often more expensive than the motorcycle itself, with premiums often reaching £1,500.

Another factor that the BMF believes could discourage youths from riding a motorbike is the future implementation of the third European license directive, which will place an age limit on access to more powerful models of bike.

However, many may still be persuaded to take up motorcycling by the increasing cost of running a car, with a recent study by Kwik Fit estimating that the expenses associated with owning one have risen by 50 per cent in the past decade.
