BMF: Riders needn't fear capital punishment
London's bikers are helping to ease congestion and reduce the frequency of accidents in the capital, according to the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF).
Spokesman Jeff Stone explained that the widespread take-up of motorcycling in London and its surrounding areas owes to the fact that they can travel the city without having to pay the congestion charge, while also escaping heavy traffic on roads such as the A2.
He also contested the motorcycle's reputation as a high-risk form of transport, claiming that the increased ratio of bikes to cars in the city is helping to lower the rate of collisions in the capital due to a couple of factors.
Mr Stone elaborated: "One, the remaining car drivers are now more aware of motorcycles as they're all over the place.

"The other thing is, as statistics have shown, the accidents are often the fault of the other driver anyway. So if you remove the other driver, you remove most of the problems."
The benefits that motorcycling can offer to commuters was further underlined by a study last month by the RAC, which revealed that over a tenth of the nation's drivers spend at least two hours travelling to and from work each day.
Perhaps the motorbike's popularity in London is partly responsible for the relatively slow growth of congestion there, with the government predicting that traffic in the capital will increase by just 1.5 per cent by 2010, compared to a 3.7 per cent rise for all urban areas.
