Pedrosa 'not quite close enough' on home soil

Dani Pedrosa has admitted that he did not quite have what it took to win the Catalan GP, but has warned his rivals that he is beginning to hit top form.

Pedrosa, who hails from Catalonia himself, began well and was one of four riders who broke away from the chasing pack early on, but in the second half of the race the youngster found it increasingly difficult to challenge Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi.

He was therefore reduced to the role of a close spectator as Stoner narrowly pipped Rossi for victory, but the Honda rider was less than four tenths of a second behind them and took the final podium place to retain third spot in the overall standings.

Afterwards, Pedrosa reflected: "I just had to wait until the last laps and hope I could find something, but I wasn't quite close enough."

He added: "I've had some good results in recent races and the performance is steadily getting better so I hope to keep improving for the next races."

This was Pedrosa's fourth podium finish out of seven races so far this season, which leaves him 42 points behind the current leader Stoner and 28 behind second-placed Rossi.

It is now nearly a year since the 21-year-old last won a race and that was the Great British GP, which is the next contest on the MotoGP calendar and one in which he will hope to prove that he is making progress with a repeat of last season's result.
