Cash boost for motorcycling safety in Yorkshire
New funds have been pumped into North Yorkshire Police's drive to improve road safety in the region by catching out a dangerous minority of speeding motorcyclists.
North Yorkshire County Council has made £30,000 available for the force's Operation Halter, to be invested in extra patrols and speed checks, special crackdowns and fast-tracking extreme speeders to court so that they are stripped of their license within days.
With riders accounting for 1,827 of the 3,860 road users stopped so far in 2007, as well as for 29 of the 118 people fast-tracked for dangerous speeding, road policing inspector Chris Charlton feels that there is definitely a problem.

He stated: "We are very well aware that motorcyclists are not the only road users to take dangerous risks, just as they are not always at fault in the terrible accidents in which they are involved.
"However, I do point out that a quarter of those caught speeding were riders, a number quite disproportionate to the number of motorcycles on the road."
Inspector Charlton said that the total of nine riders killed on North Yorkshire's roads so far this year was unacceptable and he warned that the force would continue to target bikers who come to the region and put lives in danger.
Operation Halter has nonetheless played a major role in improving rider safety in North Yorkshire, with the number of motorcyclist fatalities falling from 21 in 2005 to 13 last year.M
