FEMA celebrates potential guardrail change

The Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA) has welcomed the decision of EU members to consider using barriers not hazardous to bikers on their roads.

FEMA believes that the bloc's standards on this issue have not been designed with motorcyclist safety in mind, arguing that the biggest threat to riders during an accident is that they could subsequently collide with the supporting pole of a guardrail.

However, the organisation has now scored a success by using its new liaison status with the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) to secure its members' agreement in principle to work towards creating safer barriers for the continent's bikers.

Aline Delhaye, FEMA's general secretary, commented afterwards: "The CEN resolution is a great success for the whole rider community and we can celebrate this as a first step towards victory!

"To obtain such a positive result at our first meeting with CEN members was unexpected. One would have thought FEMA lobby work would have lasted years before obtaining such positive move forward."

She attributed this success to the hard work of FEMA's members in publicising the issue of guardrail safety, which she claimed was the reason that CEN seemed so knowledgeable about the threat faced by motorcyclists.

The British government also recently announced that it had itself successfully persuaded its CEN partners of the wisdom of creating rider-friendly crash barriers by testing new guardrails to see if they were indeed adequately safe for motorcyclists.
