RoSPA promotes safer motorcycling

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has encouraged employers to promote safer motorcycling, following the publication of new figures which show an increase in the number of riders killed on the UK's roads.

While employers are legally obliged to manage the safety of staff who use motorcycles in the course of their work, RoPSA hopes that they will also help to develop the skills of employees who motorcycle outside working hours.

Figures released by the transport department revealed that 599 motorcycle users were killed in 2006, a five per cent rise on the year before. The overall number of motorcycle casualties fell by six per cent to 23,326.

An increase in the number of motorcycle accidents could see insurance firms increase premiums if they calculate a greater risk. Employers that follow RoSPA's Safer Motorcycling Through Work guide, which gives advice on promoting motorcycling initiatives through the workplace, could serve to maintain cheap motorcycle insurance.

Kevin Clinton, RoSPA head of road safety, said that it was "disappointing" to see the death rate among motorcyclists rise in 2006 following a fall in the previous two years.

"People are often extremely busy with various commitments away from work, so we hope employers will consider enabling their staff to develop these skills via the workplace," he said.
