'Best ever weekend' is another stride forward for Stoner

Casey Stoner has moved further in front of Valentino Rossi at the top of the MotoGP table after strolling to yet another victory, this time in the American GP.

Beginning the race in pole position, Stoner briefly lost the lead to Dani Pedrosa early on but quickly regained it and then comfortably held off the challenge of eventual runner-up Chris Vermeulen, finishing more than ten points ahead of his compatriot.

Rossi, on the other hand, was part of the chasing pack from the off but never broke into the podium positions and while his final fourth place finish did prevent Stoner's overall lead from increasing even more than it might have, it was unquestionably his rival's day.

The young Australian exclaimed afterwards: "This would have to be my best racing weekend ever."

He explained: "Today everything was perfect, the tyres, the bike, everything was working great the whole weekend. We managed to be fast in every session and after all this hard work we did it in the race."

With Stoner now 44 points clear at the top, Rossi conceded that the Ducati rider is in excellent form and that it will therefore be very difficult to overhaul him, although he vowed to do his best over the final seven races of the season.

The forthcoming Czech GP, which will take place in August after a four-week interlude, would be an excellent place for the Italian to start: he has nine podiums, including five wins, in 11 races there, whereas Stoner has only once made the top three in six attempts.
