Manchester undecided over biker charge

Plans are to go ahead for a new congestion charge to be launched in Manchester, but authorities are still uncertain of whether or not it should apply to motorcyclists.

After a public consultation, the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) is set to apply for £3 billion of government funding for a scheme in which road users will pay up to £5 per day to travel into the city's centre by 2012.

However, the future of the authority's proposal for road pricing to be extended to motorcyclists remains undecided, according to Motor Cycle News, with the city's riders having already strongly voiced their opposition to this idea.

A spokesperson for GMPTA commented: "Over the course of the next few weeks, everything that was taken in over the consultation will be considered and the detail of those particular areas will be worked up and they will be announcing who will be getting discounts and how much, if motorcyclists are to be charged and how much they would be charged."

This decision could prove to be of nationwide significance for bikers, as the structure of Manchester's road pricing system will provide the framework for nine other expected schemes throughout Britain, including in Bristol, Durham and the West Midlands.

The Motorcycle Action Group recently criticised the plan to charge riders, drawing attention to the positive effect that the decision not to charge London's motorcyclists has had and expressing optimism that Manchester's authorities will drop the proposal.
