Motorcycle demand falls with the rain

Britain's motorcycle enthusiasts have lost some of their verve this summer, largely because of grim weather conditions.

A new report into the used motorcycle market indicates that torrential downpours have dampened demand for motorcycles, as Brits have been deterred from hitting the road.

"As many of the modern motorcycling fraternity 'don't do rain', poor weather directly influences activity on the forecourt," observed Randal Thomas, motorcycle editor at EurotaxGlass's.

"The record-breaking rainfall witnessed across the country so far this summer has coincided with the peak holiday season, so it seems likely that many consumers will be spending any available cash on an escape to the sun, rather than investing in a new motorbike."

It is not only the "fair-weather biker" culture that has hit demand for motorcycles, however, with rising interest rates also making borrowing more difficult.

The retail sector as a whole has struggled to cope with the Monetary Policy Committee's decisions, as consumers have been forced to curb spending and focus on saving.

Mr Thomas, like many other analysts, expects another rate rise before the end of the year, which he suggests will once again frustrate demand in the used motorcycle market. Because bikers also need to consider motorcycle insurance costs, it seems certain they will be prudent with their money in the months ahead.
