Fife police clampdown sees rogue drivers convicted
A crackdown on rogue motorists by police officers in Fife has seen drivers young and old receive convictions.
The constabulary's Road Policing Department found 13 motorists under the age of 25 using their mobile phones behind the wheel against 36 older people.
New regulations from the Department for Transport means that motorists found on the road while chatting into a handheld device, or driving erratically using a hands-free kit, can receive a £60 fine or a three-point licence penalty.
Some 13 young people were judged to be committing anti-social motoring, but no older people were found.
Motorbike Insurance - Great quotes!
Such behaviour can be a problem if someone is convicted for it. For example, it may be that cover companies refuse to issue a cheap bike insurance deal to a driver who they consider to be a risk on the road.
Alex Duncan, chief inspector at the constabulary, said he was disappointed by the figures.
"The number of young persons being detected for offences is particularly disappointing given the degree of coverage in the media regarding the campaign," he said.
Officers at the constabulary are looking into a road rage attack which occurred on the A911 near Coaltown of Balgonie.
