Road users told 'be careful in emergency'

A fire service official in Lancashire has warned motorists to take care when getting out of the way of the emergency services, it has been reported.

James Walker, a driving instructor for the force, has commented that an accident is likely if car, van or motorcycle users attempt to find a safe place to veer into in order to be helpful, the Lancashire Evening Post has commented.

As a result, it may be that a number of car, van or bike insurance polices become compromised through what is essentially an act of kindness.

Indeed, some cover companies may judge a motorist who has been involved in an accident as a hazard on the road and charge them more in accordance.

Mr Walker added that if in doubt, drivers should carry on until a safe position becomes available for them to move into, allowing emergency service vehicles to pass then.

He said: "If you are driving down a stretch of road which is a bad stretch with hazards keep driving normally until you reach a safer stretch."

This comes as police in Lothian and Borders have commented that the number of officers in their constabulary involved in accidents went down to 140 last year.
