Road users in Northumberland 'not paying attention to rural road risks'

Motorbike riders in one region of the UK may not be paying due care and attention when using rural roads, a high-ranking fire official has claimed.

According to Brian Hesler, chief fire officer at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, the activity can often have "tragic" consequences.

Indeed, it may be that some road users find that cover companies opt not to offer a cheaper bike insurance policy in the future, as they consider them a road hazard.

Mr Hesler commented that his team is often called in when a rescue operation is too complex.

"Our fire crews often witness the tragic consequences of careless driving and driving too fast for the conditions on rural roads when they have to cut casualties out of the wreckage of crashed vehicles," he said.

Taking to the road while under the influence of alcohol is another act that can be dangerous to motorbike riders as well as compromise their bike insurance policies.

According to the Department for Transport, there is an average of 3,000 road collisions caused by the activity each year.
