Bikes go green
It seems that the trend for eco-friendly vehicles that has seen a large number of fuel-efficient cars launched has now spread into the world of motorcycles.
Far from the stereotypical image of grease-stained riders in denim and leathers, bikers in Australia have found a way to power a motorbike using environmentally-friendly biodiesel.
If the trend continues to echo the market for cars, there could be more green motorcycle insurance policies that offer better rates for riders who wish to reduce their carbon footprint.
The new motorcycle was developed by students at the University of Adelaide, who now hope that one day a version of the prototype will be seen on the roads, commercially available to riders.
Motorcycle Insurance - Great quotes!
Senior lecturer Colin Kestell, who played a part in the motorbike's design, commented to ABD News: "I think you know if we look at later evolutions of this motorbike...you could make it look very conventional and be very appealing to the general public."
While maybe offering the potential for cheaper motorcycle insurance, it certainly would save money on fuel travelling for 62 miles on three-quarters of a gallon.
Adelaide Now reports that the bike also scooped the prize of Best Environmental Profile at the Greenfleet Technology Class of the 2007 Panasonic World Solar Challenge.
