Electronic bike insurance 'a positive step'
The industry has welcomed government proposals to allow vehicle insurance documents to be sent via email.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick announced the move at the Association of British Insurers (ABI) conference.
Justin Jacobs, assistant director of property, motor and liability insurance at ABI, said that the change would benefit motorists as customer service would be improved and the industry would also save up to £10 million annually.
"Electronic delivery also has the benefit of being more environmentally friendly," he added.
James Harrison, chief executive officer of Insurancewide.com, said that the convenient access of having an electronic version of their insurance would mean motorists were protected against accusations of being uninsured if they were stopped.

As well as car drivers, the move could also benefit those with bike insurance.
The European commission is working on proposals to make more financial products available and easier to manage by electronic means.
Products under the new proposals include insurance and mortgages and banks across Europe will be forced to comply.
"Consumers regularly complain about obstacles they face when attempting to switch from one provider to the other.
"Foreign banks hesitate to penetrate a new market if local customers are not mobile," Reuters quoted the Commission as stating.
