Occupational drivers 'should get more training'

Employees who have to drive as part of their job should be given extra training to make sure their motoring comes up to scratch, according to an industry analyst.

The Herald reports that this comes as close to one-third of traffic collisions involved people who are working at the time, according to Neil Greig from the Institute of Advanced Motorists Trust.

Extra training could be handy for all kinds of workers, including painters and decorators who use vans to get to their destinations as well as pizza delivery drivers who travel around on motorbikes.

Indeed, it may be that the tuition helps them to keep the cost of their bike insurance down, as fewer claims may be made.

"You can say to employers that if employees are being paid a mileage rate and representing a company then the company should be aware of what they are doing and of their standard of driving," said the expert.

Meanwhile, figures released by the Department for Transport show that there were some 3,150 fatalities recorded on the road during 2006.

The statistics marks a drop from 2005, when there were 3,201 deaths on highways in the UK.
