Motorists 'may suffer over inadequate A-roads'

People in the UK may be at risk due to the condition of the roads, after a new ranking system has found many in need of repair.

IAM Trust's ratings programme awarded 40 per cent of routes two stars, while 11 per cent picked up four stars.

This may mean that motorists in Britain find themselves in a greater amount of peril on the A-roads, which may prove to be a problem for those with car or bike insurance policies.

Indeed, an accident can cause some cover companies to steer clear of offering cheaper deals to those with a poor history on the road.

According to IAM Trust director Neil Greig, good behaviour on the road does not always result in an easier life.

He said: "While errors cannot be eliminated and may be the initial cause of a collision, poor design of the road itself is often the killer."

Meanwhile, statistics from the Department for Transport show that there were 3,150 people killed on UK roads over the course of 2006.

This is down from 2005, when 3,201 deaths were recorded by the body.
