Speeding ticket distribution 'has risen with Labour ascension'
People are being fined more for breaking the speed limit under the Labour government than they were ten years ago, it has been reported.
According to Home Office figures, some 712,753 tickets were given out in the year the Conservative Party was last in power - 1997.
The statistics show that in 2005 the number of offences recorded had almost trebled to 1.92 million.
Motorists who pick up a motoring conviction may also find that their bike insurance policies increase, due to cover companies viewing them as a bigger threat on the roads.
Motorcycle Insurance - Great quotes!
Therese Villers, the Conservative transport spokesman, has said that the government has extracted all the money they can from British drivers.
She added: "Enforcing the law should be the overriding motivation behind speed cameras and penalties. They should not be issued just as a cash cow."
But corresponding road death figures show that the number of fatalities has fallen in recent years.
In 2005, there were 3,201 people killed in accidents on UK highways, while 3,150 were reported dead as a result of traffic collisions over the course of 2006.
