Uninsured driver 'war being won by officials'

An increased number of drivers on the road are being caught by authorities for not having any insurance, it has been reported.

Speaking on behalf of the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB), a representative stated that there is a war on those without cover and officials are now winning it.

There were 150,000 vehicles seized by authorities due to motorists failing to insure them over 2007 - up on the 78,000 recorded in 2006.

Driving without bike insurance is a criminal offence and can result in riders picking up a fine, penalty points and even a ban from the road.

MIB workers are now employing camera technology which scans and reads number plates and uses a database to identify and subsequently punish offenders.

The body added that the industry paid out £360 million dealing with claims involving motorists who do not have cover.

Statistics from the DVLA and published in the Daily Mail show that there are around 9,000 vehicles currently being seized by authorities in the UK each month.

It added that the body expects the amount to hit more than 100,000 every year.
