Crackdown sees rogue Lancashire drivers punished
Drivers in Lancashire have been punished for breaking the law on the road under a new initiative from local police, it has been reported.
This Is Lancashire states that there were more than 80 people stopped each day as part of the three-month Operation Giant campaign.
Officials caught motorists out for a number of offences, including failing to wear a seatbelt and using a handheld mobile phone behind the wheel, it added.
Department for Transport officials introduced new penalties against phone use on highways on February 27th 2007.

Since then, a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty can be picked up by motorists caught using a handheld device on the road.
It may now be that those caught breaking the law in such a fashion pick up a more expensive car or bike insurance bill in the future.
This is because cover companies may view them to be representative of an increased road threat.
Meanwhile, further figures from the Department for Transport show an improvement in road safety.
In 2006, some 3,150 people were killed on UK roads, while 3,201 perished in 2005.
