Price increase planned for Berwick parkers

Authorities in Berwick are planning to increase the cost of purchasing an annual parking permit for 2008, a local news source commented.

The Berwick Advertiser states that a hike from £75 to £95 is set to be introduced by council officials.

It may be that this 26.7 per cent rise is too much for drivers in the region already paying expensive road tax and bike insurance policies.

However, transport and environmental regulations manager for the council Gary McBride told the newspaper that an annual pass is still a better option than a daily charge.

Mr McBride added that in 2007 and 2008, motorists who took out a pass paid just 31.5p per day to park - cheaper than other areas of the county.

"The proposed charge for 2008-09 is for a permit to be valued at £95 per vehicle, giving a discount of 88.7 per cent on the basis of previous examples," he said.

Meanwhile, motorists in Weston may also be set to pay more for parking, as the Weston & Somerset Mercury states that an increase in off-road rates has been scheduled for 2008 and 2009.
