England and Wales sees drink and drug-driving fall

There were fewer people caught out taking inebriating substances over the course of Christmas 2007 compared to one year earlier, new figures show.

Figures released by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Apco) show that 153 people were found under the influence of drugs during the festive period last year.

This is down from 251 in 2006, the body added.

Furthermore, there was a drop in the number of motorists caught drunk behind the wheel, with 7,800 caught out in 2007 compared to 9,700 in 2006.

It may be that those caught inebriated on the road find that they have difficulty picking up a car or bike insurance policy in the future.

This is because some firms could consider their actions to be indicative of a risky driver and increase cover prices as a result.

In the UK, current law states that people must have less than 0.8 mg of alcohol in their system per 100 ml of blood before they take to the road.

This law has been in place since 1967 and breaching it could result in a fine, a ban for the road or even a spell in prison.
