Mobile phone warning for motorists
People travelling on roads in Kent have been reminded of the importance of not using their mobile phones, it has been reported.
Kent Highway Services and Kent Police have produced figures showing that there were 3,399 instances of motorists being handed fixed penalty notices for breaking the law in such a fashion between March and December 2007.
Department for Transport legislation brought in on February 27th last year means that those found guilty of the crime can pick up a £60 fine in addition to a three-point driving licence penalty.
Such a conviction can be a problem when it comes to taking out car or bike insurance, as it may be that cover providers increase costs as a result of the offence.

Unit Inspector Geoff Wood states that officials will be clamping down on the problem in the coming weeks.
He said: "Too many people continue to use the phone illegally when they drive and it is these people we need to target."
"The safety of the public using the roads either as other drivers, passengers or pedestrians is far more important than any phone call," he added.
