Opportunistic theft 'still a problem for north-east motorists'
People using roads in the north-east should still be sure to lock up their vehicles when they leave them, a police official has commented.
The claim from chief inspector Aidan Sloan from Sunderland Area Command comes despite a 15 per cent drop in motor crime from April to December 2007 reported by the Sunderland Echo.
Some 1,413 break-ins were recorded in the city centre over the period, the publication added.
Bike Insurance - Great quotes!
Mr Sloan, Sunderland Area Command official, commented that taking the extra time to secure a vehicle can see people save on car and bike insurance policies.
"Many of these thefts are the work of opportunist criminals who will break into a vehicle if they can see something worth stealing as they walk past, or try the doors and find a vehicle is insecure," commented the official.
This comes as statistics from the Home Office show that there were nearly 1.7 million vehicle crime incidents recorded over the course of 2006 and 2007.
According to the government body, this represents a four per cent drop on the previous year and a 61 per cent fall from 1995.
