Drivers 'still ignoring mobile phone laws'

People in the UK have still not got the message about using their mobile phones while behind the wheel, it has been reported.

Figures produced by Confused.com show that there is an 18 per cent increase each month in the number of motorists breaking the law by chatting or texting on the road.

This comes despite the Department for Transport increasing punishment for those caught breaking the law in such a manner in February last year.

Under the new legislation, a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty can be picked up for using a phone while in control of a vehicle.

Motorists may also find that such a conviction can have an effect on their car or bike insurance policies, as cover firms could increase prices thinking that those caught out are a risk on the road.

Confused.com managing director Debra Williams believes that drivers may be overconfident behind the wheel.

She said: "Although many drivers feel that they can safely respond to a text message, while staying in control of their vehicle, it is important to remember that no driver is infallible."
