Government campaign asks drivers to switch off

A new initiative launched by the government is to once again remind motorists of the need to switch off their mobile phones when they travel.

The Think! campaign will be promoted on television and radio as part of a £1.5 million programme to get drivers to think about the consequences on their actions when they answer a call.

Indeed, it may be that they lose concentration on the road and collide with other travellers, resulting in people having to claim on their car or bike insurance policies.

The new campaign comes close to a year after Department for Transport legislation meant that people found guilty of the act can now pick up a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick, who launched the scheme on Friday, states that drivers who do not switch off are risking their own lives as well as other people.

The official said: "Talking on a mobile phone when driving is distracting and affects your ability to react to dangerous situations, making you four times more likely to have a crash."
