Lancashire motorists foot £3 million bill in 2007

There was an increase in the number of fines picked up in some Lancashire authorities over 2007, it has been stated.

According to figures posted by the Lancashire Evening Post, a £3 million bill was footed by motorists in the county, with 74 out of 174 authorities reporting a rise.

Such an increase could have an effect on car and bike insurance policy prices in the region, as cover firms could see motorists as an increased threat on the roads.

Lancaster was one of the worst regions according to the statistics, with 13 per cent more fines recorded there than in 2006.

However, Lancaster councillor Roger Mace comments that he is more concerned in helping innocent drivers get appeals overturned than the amount guilty motorists are paying out.

"I am much more concerned about parking fees paid by law-abiding citizens than about the level of fines paid by people who do not obey parking regulations," said the official.

The figures may be down in part to the Department for Transport last year introducing an increased fine for those caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel.

Guilty drivers can now pick up a £60 fine in addition to three licence points.
