Bridges in Scotland go toll-free

Officials in Scotland have dropped a toll which previously meant that motorists in the county had to pay to cross bridges.

The Tay and Forth bridges cost drivers 80p and £1 respectively but now they will able to travel along the structure gratis.

Motorists now stand to make a substantial saving as the Forth Bridge is one of the UK's busiest crossings, taking more than 22 million people per year.

This money can be put to use buying petrol, paying a road tax bill or a car or bike insurance policy.

According to a spokesperson from the National Alliance Against Tolls, this will result in a boost for the regions around the bridges.

"It's been a long fight to remove the tolls and we're delighted Scotland will again be a toll-free nation," the representative stated.

Meanwhile, the Scotsman reports that transport minister Stewart Stevenson has hailed the move to cut costs as "historic".

However, the news source states that it may also be that the area sees increased congestion as a result of drivers being less reluctant to use the bridges.
