Drivers speak out against congestion charge plans

Plans to bring in a new congestion charge for motorists travelling in the centre of Sheffield have been rebuffed by local drivers, a news source in the area reports.

Last week, environmental official Andy Nolan commented that one way to reduce the city's carbon footprint is to introduce such a fee, the Sheffield Star states.

It may be that the charge is too much for motorists in the area, who could already be paying out for expensive road tax and car or bike insurance bills.

Drivers have spoken out against the plan, claiming that they should not have to pay extra to use the roads, a view which is supported by Liberal Democrat spokesperson Simon Clement-Jones.

He said: "We don't think that congestion charging is appropriate for Sheffield at this time."

Meanwhile, London motorists will have to pay more to travel in the centre of the city from October 27th.

Mayor Ken Livingstone has introduced a £25 charge for people using vehicles which emit a high volume of CO2, while those which do not will be exempt from the fee.
