Road pricing 'is no solution'

The Association of British Drivers (ABD) is arguing that road pricing will not solve the UK's transport problems.

According to its policy adviser Nigel Humphries, road pricing is not a cost-effective solution.

Earlier this week, transport secretary Ruth Kelly announced extra funding for tackling congestion on the nation's roads.

Welcoming the decision by Ruth Kelly that plans for a national pay-as-you-go road pricing system have been delayed, the ABD suggested the government does not realise how such plans would impact on road users such as bike insurance customers.

The organisation suggests that London, where road pricing has been in force, time gains on journeys have been "minimal".

It claims that the result for road users has been that they have been charged "for the privilege of driving in congestion".

Mr Humphries, citing figures from the Confederation of British Industry, suggested time delays and congestion cost the economy £26 billion.

"Since time and money are related, any attempt to achieve the same level of traffic regulation by a price mechanism will cost the economy at least as much as the congestion did in the first place," he added.

Founded in 1992, the ABD is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation that campaigns for the rights of drivers.
