Tyres 'a critical concern in wet conditions'

People travelling on roads in the UK have been warned to make sure they are using the right tyres in order to stay safe, a motoring body has indicated.

TyreSafe has cited research which shows that a quarter of tyres used on British highways are not up to scratch, representing a danger to British drivers.

It could be that motorists find that they risk their car insurance policies if they do not properly maintain their wheels.

Similarly, cover firms could choose not to offer cheaper deals to people in the future if they have a history of negligent behaviour towards their vehicle on the road.

Indeed, figures from the Department for Transport show that 3,150 people died on UK roads over the course of 2006.

"With the latest bout of extreme weather forecast to last for much of the week ahead, which is battering the UK with heavy rain and gale force winds, TyreSafe...is calling on motorists to take added care," the company commented.

This comes as industry body Tyre & Accessories has revealed that Dutch automobile manufacturing firm Vredestein has recently joined TyreSafe.
