Motorists urged to switch transport method for money

A new initiative from council officials in Islington is inviting motorists to be rewarded for swapping their cars for bikes, a local news source has reported.

£200 in vouchers for local car clubs and bike shops is being offered to people who make the swap, sweetening the deal for those ready to give up their automobiles, according to the Worthing Herald.

It may be that by using their vehicles less, motorists in the region find that they save money on their car or motorbike insurance policies.

This is because cover firms could view people to be less of a threat if they do not risk an accident by using the road.

And the news provider added that officials are also making a number of bike routes available to riders in order to make the initiative more attractive.

Environmental concerns could be a factor behind the move, with authorities looking to reduce the area's carbon footprint.

In last week's Budget, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling increased tax for motorists in vehicles emitting a high volume of carbon dioxide.
