Satellite technology 'helps parents keep track'

Motorists heading onto the road for the first time could be watched by their parents thanks to new technology, it has been reported.

According to Times Online, the Safety Center from US company GreenRoad employs satellite technology to allow mums and dads to keep track of their children.

By logging onto a website, they can watch footage of their offspring as they drive, which may help increase road safety awareness.

Indeed, those who take to the road knowing they are being watched could be involved in fewer collisions, which may in turn have an effect on car insurance policies.

This is because some firms may choose to increase costs if they consider drivers to be dangerous.

And Staffordshire County Council is to use the technology as part of a new trial, the publication added.

"The aim of this trial is not to spy on young people then punish them, but to highlight where they are going wrong so they can change their behaviour and avoid accidents," said head of road safety for the authority, Adrian Hide.

Current UK law permits young people to take to the road as soon as they hit 17, so long as they have a provisional licence.
