'Most ticketed street in Scotland' sees notices fall

There has been a recorded decrease in the number of parking tickets issued by officials on one street in Scotland, it has been reported.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, some 4,000 fewer fixed penalty notices were handed out to drivers in the city on George Street over the last two years.

The figures were released under the freedom of information act and show that motorists are better-behaved today, although Nigel Duncan, chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses in Edinburgh, believes people are simply staying away.

He said: "The constraints put on motorists coming in to the city centre...means most people are shopping at centres on the periphery because they are easier to get to and they can park their car."

Motorists who pick up a parking ticket may find that they suffer from expensive car insurance policies in the future, as some firms give out more expensive deals to people with a history of road convictions.

This comes as new powers are to be given to parking wardens from the end of the month.

Officials will be allowed to hand out two levels of fine depending on the severity of the offence from Monday March 31st.
