New vehicle emissions 'down over last decade'

Motorists driving new vehicles in the UK are emitting less today than they were ten years ago, an industry body has claimed.

According to the Guardian, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that in 1997 new automobiles were putting out 189.8g per km of CO2.

However, last year there was a reported drop of 4.8 per cent as 164.9g per km was emitted, the figures show.

The improvement may be down to an increased emphasis on alleviating pressure on the environment in recent years, with vehicle cover firms offering cheaper car and bike insurance deals should people travel in an eco-friendly vehicle.

Paul Everitt commented that while the figures are positive, the vehicles cited only represent 2.4 million (m) of the 31m automobiles currently using British roads.

"The role of older cars and factors like driving style, load and distance travelled must not be overlooked in the drive to cut emissions," commented the official.

Congestion charges are set to go up in London from October.

Mayor Ken Livingstone has commented that people in high-emissions vehicles will pay more to travel through the centre of the capital in October.
