Motorists paid £100m in speed camera fines in 2006-07

Drivers in the UK paid more than £100 million (m) in fines issued after being caught breaking the law by speed cameras, new statistics have shown.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has revealed that £104.4m was spent by motorists over this period, with drivers in London paying the most.

Indeed, people travelling in the capital ended up footing a combined bill of £7.5m - the highest in the UK - while Thames Valley drivers paid £4.5m.

A motoring conviction caught on camera can have a serious affect on motorbike riders, as it may be that their bike insurance policies go up if cover firms consider them a risk on the road.

The body added that operating costs mean that officials have £6.4 million in leftover funds to be split between the 38 safety camera partnerships in England and Wales.

But a DfT spokeswoman states that road safety, not money, is the reason the cameras are used.

"Independent research has shown there are 1,745 fewer deaths and serious injuries at camera sites each year," said the official.

Two new cameras are to be put up on the A435 Alcester Road in Studley, the Redditch Advertiser has reported.
