Official: Drink-drive limit cut a good thing

A drop in the drink-drive limit would change the way motorists think about alcohol, it has been claimed.

Scotland on Sunday has reported that the official limit could fall to as a little as a small glass of wine.

It added that this could see up to 200,000 people per year punished by losing their licences.

Similarly, it may be that they risk their car or bike insurance policies in the process, as cover firms could view their behaviour to be indicative of a dangerous driver and increase costs.

Rob Gifford from the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety stated that such a change will have an effect on the way drivers approach alcohol.

"Lowering the limit may not affect those who are two or three times over the limit, but it will have a sobering effect on those at or just over the current limit," the official said.

British law currently states that the current drink-driving limit is 0.8mg alcohol per 100ml blood in the system.

Motorists found having consumed more than the amount can pick up a jail term.
