Rogue parkers under scrutiny as new rules come in

Motorists who park their vehicles illegally in South Yorkshire will be subject to a new staggered system of fines from officials in the region, it has been reported.

The Sheffield Star has stated that new rules which come into effect today mean that a £50 and £70 fixed penalty notice will be handed out to drivers depending on the severity of the offence.

In addition, the news source added that officials will be given the power to send parking fines via post, meaning that they can eventually catch up with motorists who drive off before being given a ticket.

This could result in more to pay out for motorists on top of expensive car insurance and road tax bills.

But Rotherham council parking services manager Martin Beard commented that the new rules are not a money-making scheme.

"The legislation has not been introduced as a means of generating income but rather to ensure the free movement of traffic. Our role is to manage the competing demands for kerb space," he said.

A woman has been killed and two others seriously injured in an accident on a South Yorkshire road yesterday, according to the Sheffield Telegraph.
