Edinburgh 'will not catch rogue parkers with CCTV'

Officials in Edinburgh will not be using CCTV technology to catch out rogue parkers in the region, it has been reported.

The Edinburgh Evening Times has revealed that outgoing development director Andrew Holmes said that such a scheme will not be implemented in the near future.

London currently uses cameras to catch out illegal parkers as well as to assist in policing the congestion charge but, while the system works, Edinburgh will not be adopting it just yet.

Being found breaking the law in such a manner could see people in the region pick up a fine as well as compromise their motorcycle insurance policies.

This is because some cover firms may judge their conviction as indicative of a dangerous road user.

"While this system has been effective in London within the congestion charging cordon, we are still a way off this type of system in Scotland," commented Mr Holmes.

This comes as wardens across the UK have been given extra powers in order to police the streets.

Since Monday, officials have been able to send tickets through the post, in order to punish motorists who drive away without being issued the notice.
