Two in five 'would welcome 20mph speed limit'
A significant amount of motorists travelling on roads across the UK would welcome plans to introduce a lower speed limit in city areas, it has been reported.
Out of every five British motorists, two would be happy to see a 20mph limit brought in for residential areas, according to car supermarket company Motorpoint.
This means that 12 million people are behind a plan for the rest of the UK to follow Portsmouth, which earlier this year adopted the boundary for city streets within the authority.

It may be that the new limit has an effect on car and motorbike insurance policies in the region - perhaps becoming cheaper if cover firms view areas of the UK as safer.
"We were surprised at the extent to which people seem ready to accept a lower speed limit in residential areas," commented David Shelton, managing director of Motorpoint.
This comes as figures recorded by the Department of Transport show a drop in roads deaths since 2005.
Indeed, some 3,201 people were killed during that year, although this fell to 3,150 in 2006.
